BFI Gallery Book, The: The British Film Institute's contemporary art gallery
Fabrizi, Elisabetta
The BFI Gallery, which opened in March 2007, was a unique project which brought together in one space some of the best artists working with the moving image today, allowing them to show their work in a different, inspiring context. Part of the BFI Southbank complex, it was the only London art gallery specifically dedicated to commissioning and showcasing artists' films and videos and the moving image in its most contemporary forms. It has commissioned new work by Jane & Louise Wilson, Patrick Keiller, Pierre Bismuth & Michel Gondry, Mat Collishaw, Peter Campus, Apichatpong Weerasethakul and many others. The book includes information on all of the shows presented at the Gallery, interviews with the artists and commissioned essays. Fully illustrated with installation shots taken in the space, it is a precious tool for anyone interested in the intersection between the white cube of the gallery and the cinema auditorium.
The book covers all of the exhibitions which took place at the BFI Gallery from its opening in March 2007 to the final exhibition in Spring 2011. Featured artists are: Jennifer and Kevin McCoy; Lynette Wallworth; Mark Lewis; Patrick Keiller; Faisal Abdu'Allah; Susan pui san lok; Pierre Bismuth & Michel Gondry; Michael Snow; Jane & Louise Wilson; Simon Faithfull; Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard; Deimantas Narkevicius; Mat Collishaw; Apichatpong Weerasethakul; John Akomfrah; Julian Rosefeldt; Yvonne Rainer.
