The Indian Cinema Book brings together established specialists and emerging researchers from India, Europe, the United States and Australia to explore Indian cinema's extraordinary diversity and long history from the early twentieth century to the present day. This text carries forward existing areas of critical and research interest in Indian cinema (such as ideologies of film, the parallel cinema movement, the star phenomenon) and also provides a fresh focus on neglected areas including early cinema, the role of spectacle in the form of dance and music, regional cinemas, newer star constructs, as well as Indian cinema's transnational connections.
The volume provides a comprehensive critical anthology on Indian cinema that addresses the industrial aspects of Indian cnema from its beginnings to the present day and accounts for the regional diversity of Indian cinema and Bombay cinema's position within this diversity.
The collection consists of six thematic sections: Introduction, Histories, Narrative and Genres, Star and Spectacle, Regional Cinemas, and Global Contexts. Each section organised achieves a thematic chronological coherence that will allow readers to follow continuities across the decades while at the same time focusing on specific critical moments and developments in Indian cinema. The general introduction outlines key concepts and theoretical paradigms used to think about Indian cinema. Each essay is accompanied by a comprehensive bibliography and suggested further readings.
The Indian Cinema Book is designed to be comprehensive and accessible. It will appeal to a wide range of readers, from students and researchers in South Asian Studies, Film and Cultural Studies, film enthusiasts, as well as to the interested reader and who is trying to understand cinema as a global phenomenon.
