Story Shorts 2: A DVD compilation and online teaching guide
BFI Education
A DVD compilation and teaching guide
As we move further into the 21st Century, there is growing recognition that the curriculum we provide for children must connect to their real lives, enriching experiences which inevitably include those they engage with on screen. In today's classroom, the possibilities the technological revolution offers the practitioner are endless - and making sense of these is a challenge. The aim of this resource, therefore, is to support teachers in using the language of film in a skilful and discriminating way, one which will engage children, widening their horizons and assisting them in their learning journey as authors and viewers. Above all, there is the recognition that the inclusive nature of film lends itself to unearthing universal truths which support understanding across a range of cultures, both within the classroom and beyond.
Following the success of Story Shorts (our first short films resource for Key Stage 2 Literacy), we have listened and responded to teachers' requests for further material. Story Shorts 2 is the result. The DVD includes a carefully selected collection of 12 short films between two and ten minutes long, primarily aimed at children in Years 3 to 6, but is also suitable for older children, covering a wide range of issues and subjects and range from early archive footage to 21st Century films. The booklet enclosed with the DVD introduces ways of thinking about and teaching with short films. These web pages contain further teaching guidelines, student worksheets and additional materials.
